Is OptiLight the same as regular IPL?

OptiLight uses the same Lumenis IPL technology as our skin treatments, but it is specifically FDA-approved and calibrated for the delicate periorbital area around the eyes. The settings, protective shields, and treatment protocol are specifically designed for dry eye management — it is not the same as a standard skin IPL treatment.

How is OptiLight different from eye drops?

Eye drops provide temporary lubrication but do not address the underlying cause of most dry eye — Meibomian Gland Dysfunction. OptiLight treats MGD directly by clearing blocked glands, reducing inflammation, and restoring the natural oil layer of your tear film for lasting improvement.

Most patients describe the sensation as mild warmth during the light pulses. Protective eye shields are placed over your eyes throughout the treatment. The procedure is generally well-tolerated and takes approximately 15 minutes.

How many sessions will I need?

Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD)

MGD is the leading cause of evaporative dry eye. The meibomian glands in your eyelids produce the oil layer of your tear film — when these glands become blocked or dysfunctional, the oil hardens, tears evaporate too quickly, and dry eye symptoms result.

The Treatment

Lumenis OptiLight IPL

Precise pulses of light are delivered to the skin just below the eyes. The light energy gently heats the meibomian glands, liquifying hardened oils so they can flow freely again. It also reduces abnormal blood vessels (telangiectasia) around the eyelids that contribute to inflammation, and has been shown to reduce Demodex mite populations — a common contributor to MGD.

Long-Term Maintenance

Before Your Treatment

Discontinue retinol, skin-brightening serums, and certain antibiotics (such as doxycycline) one week prior — discuss with your provider.

Avoid sun exposure and self-tanners for at least 2–4 weeks before treatment.

Remove all eye makeup and contact lenses before your appointment.

Inform your provider of all eye medications, drops, and supplements you are currently using.
